Youth Speaks Poetry Event
In-person Location: Woodside High School (199 Churchill Ave, Woodside, CA 94062)

Details: As part of Mental Health Month 2023, Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD) will be hosting a youth poetry event on Saturday, May 6th, 10a-2p, at Woodside High School. The flyer for the event is attached. This event is supported with funding from the SABG Prevention set-aside funds.

The event is co-sponsored by the Behavioral Health Commission’s Youth Committee and will be moderated by members of the Youth Committee. It will be an opportunity for youth to learn to create, write, and perform their spoken word poetry, TikTok, and raps. The sessions will have a social-emotional well-being focus where poetry is taught as an outlet for expression and emotional regulation. While youth are in their TikTok session, there will be a parent workshop to learn about the foundations of good mental health and its relationship to substance use and suicide prevention. Parents will discuss how to have effective conversations with youth about mental health and substance use and be provided local resources for additional support.

At lunch-time, we will have a resource fair to connect with local organizations. We also hope to have the new iteration of the [Decoded] Escape Room game available for folks to check out and possibly schedule for use at their schools!

Please help us promote the event among your youth- and parent-serving networks. We hope you will be able to join us. The QR code to register is on the flyer.
