Power Outage Food Safety for Schools
Protect students from foodborne illness
The loss of power can pose serious health and safety issues at school food facilities. In the event of a power outage, school food facilities must do the following to protect the safety of students, and stay in compliance with food requirements:
1. Review and follow Environmental Health Services’ Power Outage Food Safety Steps that guide you on what to do with food before, during, and after a power outage.
2. Prepare for a power outage by creating a Foodservice Emergency Readiness Plan that include the following:
- School Food Service Procedures During a Power Outage
- Power Outage Emergency Inventory
- Alternative Resources During a Power Outage
3. Remember: When in doubt, throw it out!
4. Contact Environmental Health Services at (650) 372-6200 with any food safety questions.
