Alfonso Parocua, MD
PGY4 Co-Chief resident

Profile

Alfonso Parocua is a graduate of the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, where he also completed his undergraduate education. Raised in Los Angeles in a Mexican immigrant household, his experiences navigating healthcare alongside his family inspired a longstanding commitment to community psychiatry and caring for underserved populations. Throughout his training, he has remained actively involved in free clinics, community outreach, and mentorship programs focused on expanding access to mental healthcare and supporting students from historically underrepresented backgrounds pursuing careers in medicine. His clinical interests include community psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and addressing healthcare disparities through public-sector mental health systems. He also helps lead a team providing medication treatment for opioid use disorder within the San Mateo County jail system. Alfonso graduated from medical school with Distinction and was selected by his peers for the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He was also named a 2025–2026 MERF Scholar for his work in the field of addiction and received the Excellence in Hospital-Based Psychiatry Award for the 2025–2026 academic year. Outside of medicine, he enjoys running, attending sporting events, and exploring local coffee shops, with the hope of one day opening a coffee shop of his own.
