In collaboration with BHRS, Voices of Recovery is proud to host Recovery Happens Month celebrations throughout September. These events are 100% free and provide positive and empowering opportunities for individuals and families in recovery from substance use challenges to connect, celebrate and build community. 

Since 1989, National Recovery Month has been held to create space for us all to honor and support the nation’s proud and strong recovery community, new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery possible.  

Please join us this month! 

Candlelight Vigil – Tuesday September 1, 5:00pm at Courthouse Courtyard, 400 County Center, Redwood City 

We kick off the month with an event where we will hear stories about recovery, remember those we have lost, and celebrate recovery of all forms as we light candles in recognition of people everywhere who are discovering recovery, achieving long-term freedom from substances, and improving recovery outcomes.

Recovery Picnic – Wednesday September 9, 10:00am at Coyote Point Recreation Area, Eucalyptus Picnic Area, San Mateo  

Join us for a joyful atmosphere including a DJ, lawn games, raffles, and a guided walk around Coyote Point led by San Mateo County Park Rangers. Throughout the event, there will be a resource fair to discover services and resources available throughout the county for support, recovery and more. Come and enjoy a day of great food, community, connection and celebration! Make sure to mention the “Recovery Picnic” for free parking. 

Proclamation, Breakfast and the Walk of Hope – Tuesday September 15, 8:30am at Courthouse Courtyard, 400 County Center, Redwood City 

While the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors proclaims September Recovery Happens Month, we gather in the courtyard for an event featuring stories about hope and recovery. Following the speaker program, we continue with the Walk of Hope honoring Philomena Anderson-Ashford and her contribution to the recovery community. A resource fair completes the day’s events. 

Recovery Dance – Saturday September 26, 6:00pm at Project 90 Friendship Hall, 416 Second Avenue, San Mateo 

Our month-long celebration wraps up with a dance at Friendship Hall. This event features music, dancing and karaoke. The theme this year is “Glow in Recovery” and attendees are encouraged to showcase their individuality with glow-in-the-dark attire. This evening is all about unity, activity, joy and gratitude for recovery and its positive impact on lives.
