In recognition of Mental Health Month, the Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Health Ambassador Program (HAP) and the Office of Supervisor Ray Mueller partnered to host “Nourishing Wellness: A Community Conversation on Eating Disorders”, a bilingual community event designed to increase awareness, reduce stigma and connect residents with support and resources.

The event was inspired by Health Ambassadors and community members who identified a need for more culturally responsive education and support around eating disorders and disordered eating, particularly among Spanish-speaking families. In response, HAP and its partners created a welcoming space where community members could learn, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue in both English and Spanish.

Over 100 individuals—including community members, families, County staff, community partners, and children—participated in the community conversation.

The event successfully engaged a diverse audience from across San Mateo County, including many immigrant families and community members. Eighty-four percent of participants reported being born outside the United States, highlighting the importance of culturally responsive and linguistically accessible education around eating disorders and disordered eating. Participants also included individuals with lived experience, family members, and community members seeking information and support.

Resource tables provided additional opportunities for participants to learn about local services and community resources.

One of the most meaningful outcomes was the sense of trust and connection created throughout the event. Community members openly shared personal experiences and family challenges, demonstrating the importance of creating safe, culturally responsive spaces where difficult topics can be discussed with compassion and understanding.

Participant evaluations reflected overwhelmingly positive feedback. Attendees reported increased confidence in seeking support, greater comfort discussing behavioral health concerns, and a stronger understanding of available resources. Nearly all participants indicated they would recommend similar events to others.

The success of “Nourishing Wellness” highlights the value of community-informed outreach and partnership. It also demonstrates the important role of trusted messengers that serve as a bridge between BHRS and the communities we serve. Through outreach, education and trusted relationships, Health Ambassadors help identify emerging needs, reduce stigma and connect residents and families to County behavioral health resources and support.

By bringing light to a topic that is often misunderstood and rarely discussed openly, “Nourishing Wellness” fostered awareness, hope and healing while reinforcing BHRS’s commitment to supporting the well-being of all communities across San Mateo County.
