General information

The African American Community Initiative has established a partnership with the African American Community Health Advisory Council (AACHAC). Since 1995 the African-American Community Health Advisory Committee has been working with businesses, corporations, community-based organizations, health educators and the faith community to create an awareness of the major health concerns affecting African-Americans and to actively seek and promote a more healthful lifestyle.

This coming year, AACI and AACHAC will partner to bring greater awareness of mental health, mental illness, challenges, and resources to the African American community. This partnership will lead to increased awareness of Mental Health services and programs of San Mateo County’s Behavioral Health and Recovery System (BHRS). AACI co-hosted its annual Black History Month event in February 2015 highlighting challenges faced by African-American’s and Mental Health and ways to address and overcome them.

Recently, on December 6th, AACI supported AACHAC’s annual Women’s Health Conference at the San Francisco Airport Marriott in Burlingame. The event was attended by over 500 community members. The keynote address was brought by authors of Focus on Your Best Health, Brenda B. Spriggs, MD and Glenda Newell, MD. AACI participated by offering information about the mental health services and trainings offered through the Office of Diversity and Equity of BHRS.
