Commission on Aging

Description

The commission works with Aging & Disability Services and the Board of Supervisors to improve the quality of life for seniors by ensuring access to services that promote independence, health, community participation and self-sufficiency. Commissioners act as advocates for older residents, monitor programs and provide guidance on planning and development of services. The commission also engages the community through committees that address topics such as senior isolation, transportation and caregiver support.

Independence, health, community involvement and self-sufficiency for older adults in San Mateo County.

Membership

• 17 voting members appointed by the Board of Supervisors
• At least 60 percent of members must be age 60 or older
• Includes older adults, service providers, health care providers, family caregivers and other residents
• Terms: Three years, maximum of 12 years of service
• Along with the 17 appointed voting members, two County representatives to the California Senior Legislature, a Youth Commissioner and a member of the Board of Supervisors, or his/her representative, hold a seat on the Commission.
• There are three elected officers of the Commission: a Chairperson, 1st  Vice-Chair and 2nd Vice-Chair. Officers serve a one-year term with a maximum of two terms.

Key Functions

• Advises Aging & Disability Services and the Board of Supervisors on policies, programs and funding affecting seniors
• Advocates for older adult needs at the county and state levels
• Provides input on the county’s Area Plan for Aging
• Engages the public and partners on issues such as transportation, isolation and caregiver support

Commission on Aging Meetings

General Meeting: Every 2nd Monday of the month, except for August & December

*Holiday rescheduling: If a regularly scheduled general meeting falls on an official County or federal holiday, the meeting will be held instead on the following Monday at the same time and place, unless otherwise noticed. Please refer to the 2026 meeting schedule below for specific dates and additional details.

Executive Committee: Every 1st Monday of the month, except for August & December

Information, Resource and Community Engagement Committee (Formerly Resource Access and Inclusion Committee): Every 2nd Monday of the month, except for August & December

Social Isolation and Transportation Committee (Formerly Transportation and Aging in Community Committee): Every 2nd Thursday of the month, except for August & December

Aging Readiness and Family Caregiver Support Committee: Every 4th Monday of the month, except for August & December

The Commission invites the public to all the meetings.
